A Door Fee

- A note to 'A Door Fee', the ASPECT 2008 exhibition held in SPACE MOM Museum of Art -
The gadgets that lead the modern living and civilization such as broadcast-communication-digital media or GPS system lead us to the door that demands a special passage fee. That door is attractive enough for us to forget our being as human. The existence of human being that has been protected by 'dignity' is now downgraded to a daily updated data and a consumption good of another gadget. There are only the manipulator (the one with 'gadget' quality or the 'gadget' producer) and the manipulated (information), who are entangled in opening and closing the piled up doors.
Although the artists, who call themselves as the litmus paper of today, show where the pendulum of this era is pointing through their works (knowingly or unknowingly), such effort is far from the power that dominates or changes the reality but is a mere indication of reality as suggested by its limited nature. This may be called another 'gadget' (but a slightly different 'gadget') that reveals the reality of the manipulated rather than that of the manipulator (the one with power), but 'satire' between the two parties is more likely as it is incapable of controlling the world.
‘The one that satirizes' might not want to pay that uncomfortable passage fee(although obligated to do so), which is why they try to reveal the identity of numerous gadgets that made human being to believe in the false happiness because of the comfort and convenience. Even though they seem helplessly naive and foolish, they would remind the accurate reality of the era that will enlighten us with a big surprise like the child in the 'naked king' tale.
Human being advocate sacrificial love and practice at times, but more often, we end up paying more expensive passage fee at certain doors due to our ignorance and selfishness. Because our hands that grab the handle of those doors of all kinds are connected to our true nature called 'desire'.
‘Alfred de Musset’, in his poem, said
“Life is the apprenticeship.... Pain is his master"
However, will human race ever have the door of complete freedom and peace? Will human race be able to dream of a 'certain door' without fee?

통행료(A Door Fee) 다양한 문(門), 하나의 영역(領域)
방송-통신-디지털 미디어 또는 GPS 시스템 등 현대 생활과 문명을 이끄는 가젯(gadget)은 우리인류를 특별한 통행료(通行料)를 요구하는 문(門)으로 인도하는데 그 문(門)들은 너무나도 매력적이어서 인류가 인간이라는....혹은 인간이었다는 그 정체성을 잊게 만드는 가젯(gadget)들이다. 과거에는 ‘존엄성’으로 보호받았던 인간 존재가 이제는 하나의 데이터와 정보로 전락하여 하루하루 업 데이터(up data)되어가는 또 다른 가젯(gadget)의 소모품으로 변해 오로지 조종자(‘가젯’적인 소양이 있는 자 또는 ‘가젯’ 생산자)와 조종당하는 자(정보)로서 중첩된 문(門)들을 서로 엉켜 열며 닫고 있다.
오늘날 시대의 리트머스 시험지라 자처하는 예술가는 이 시대의 시계추가 어디쯤 지시하고 있는지를 그 작업들로 보여주나(자신들이 알든 모르든), 그 속성의 한계처럼 시대의 현주소를 밝힐 뿐 현실을 주도하거나 바꾸는 힘과는 거리가 멀다. 이것은 조종하는 자(권력을 가진 자)보다는 조종당하는 자의 현실을 밝히는 또 다른 ‘가젯’(그러나 조금 색다른 ‘가젯’)이라 할 수 있겠으나 세상을 이래라저래라 하지 못 하기에(하지 않기에) 그 두 부류 사이에 있는 ‘풍자(諷刺)가’라는 명칭이 어울릴 것 같기도 하다.
‘풍자(諷刺)하는 자’는 어쩌면 그 불편한 통행료를 지불하고 싶어 하지 않는 존재일지도 모른다(통행세를 지불하지 않을 순 없지만). 그래서 그동안 인류에게 안락함과 편리성을 내세워 가짜행복을 진짜로 믿게 만들던 수많은 가젯(gadget)의 정체를 밝혀내려 하는데, 속절없이 순수하기만 하고 다분히 어리석어 보이는 느낌도 있는 그들은 어느 순간 ‘벌거벗은 임금님’의 우화에 나오는 어린아이와 같이 “임금님은 벌거벗었어요!”라며 정말 눈이 휘둥글 해질 만큼 정확히 당대의 현실을 깨우쳐주는 역할도 하게 된다.
때로는 인간이 이타적인 사랑과 희생적인 실천을 내세우기도하지만, 번번히 우리 스스로의 미련함과 이기심으로 인해 어떤 문(門)들은 더 값비싼 통행료를 지불하기도 하는데 왜냐하면 어떤 형태이든 그 문(門)의 손잡이를 잡은 우리의 손은 ‘욕망’이라는 본성과 연결되어져있기 때문이다.
‘Alfred de Musset’ 는 그의 시(詩)에서
“인생은 견습공이고... 고통은 그의 주인”이라 하였지만
인간에게 완전한 자유와 평안의 문(門)이 있을까? 그리고 통행료가 없는 그 ‘어떤 문(門)’을 꿈꾸어 볼 수 있을까?

어떤 자가
당신의 문 앞에서 통행료를 요구할지 모르니.
