Washington Square Windows is pleased to announce an exhibition of the work of Ik-Song Jin which will be on public view from February 10th through April 10th, 2006. The installation is mounted in three windows facing Washington Square Park and is lighted 24 hours a day. We welcome all inquiries from the press and the public. Please stop by.

Mysterious wooden doors might be portals to new knowledge and adventure. Each is singularly adorned with multiple door-knobs, hinges, louvers, latches, keys, found objects, or even a mass of padlocks. A host of antiquated hardware ornaments their stained and varnished surfaces. All doors may hint at secret access to another realm, yet, they are closed, and remain firmly anchored to a wall--poignantly denying passage.

For Jin, these mixed media doors symbolize the full spectrum of emotions experienced in everyday life--most particularly a personal struggle to preserve his identity as a stranger visiting New York. “The door I looked for was an entrance to communicate with the other world.... I was not a conqueror to destroy...but a visitor.... Everybody is longing for his/her own door.... We imagine the one which is good for us and choose.... But once we select the door, we get into another world and experience different colors of life. ”

진익송의 신비스러운 작품의 문(門)들은 마치 도전과 깨달음으로 인도하는 입구와 같아 보인다. 각 작품들은 중첩된 문(門)의 손잡이, 경첩, 창문, 빗장(걸쇠), 열쇠 등의 오브제(object)로 구성되어 졌으며, 구성되어진 오브제(object)들은 녹슨 흔적과 세월의 상흔(傷痕)으로 남아있는 표면의 질감으로 인해 신비스러운 느낌을 더해주고 있다.

그의 모든 문(門)들은 또 다른 세계를 인도하는 비밀을 암시(hint)하는 것 같으나 아직까지 그 문(門)들은 닫혀져 있고 높이 솟아있는 담처럼 그 내면을 보여주길 거부하며 견고히 고착되어 남아 있는 듯하다.

진익송은 이 혼합 오브제(Object)작품들을 통해 그의 일상적 경험에 의한 감정의 스펙트럼(spectrum)을 상징화 하였다. 이것은 특별히 그가 뉴욕에서의 삶을 통해 동양인으로서 체험하게 된 그의 정체성(identity)에 대한 깊은 사유(思惟)이기도 하다.

그러나 진익송은 그의 작품에 대하여 다음과 같이 언급하였다. “나는 문(門)들의 이미지를 차용하여 우리의 삶 속에 존재하는 갈등의 벽을 극복하는 ‘통로’로써의 메시지를 제시하였습니다. 사람들은 때에 맞추어 각기 자신이 소망했던 문(門)들을 선택하게 되며, 그 선택 이후에 맞닥뜨려질 세계(상황)를 향해 자신만의 색깔들을 만들며 살아가겠지요.”
